On Policing of Mpeg Video Streams Using Multi (; ) Envelopes

The MPEG coding scheme is expected to be the compression algorithm for the future ATM video applications. On account of its wide variability and the type of coding used, Policing of MPEG traac is critical. Leaky Bucket algorithm has been the conventional method used for policing the network traac. Due to the nature of the MPEG video stream, a single Leaky Bucket based on a single (;) envelope has been proved to be ineecient for policing such traacc1]. In the current project a time-invariant traac envelope is constructed for the traac streams which is used to construct a multi (;) envelope and thus are policed by more than one Leaky Bucket. The advantage here is that, since the traac envelope of the multi (;) closely follows that of the traac stream, signiicant improvements in the utilization can be achieved. The improvements in the utilization when we move from n to n+k number of (;)s have been found. The results show that, 99% of utilization improvements that can result by this method is achieved by having 3-5 Leaky Buckets, which is simple enough to be put in practice. This method also putforths a method for validating the various MPEG traac models suggested in the literature.
